Breweries

Breweries typically produce 2-6 hl wastewater per hl of produced beer. The wastewater contains mainly easily biodegradable organic compounds such as sugars, ethanol and soluble starch. Because of its high biodegradability, biological treatment is the most favorite treatment method for brewery wastewater.

The Biothane Advanced UASB and the Biobed® Advanced EGSB technologies can be applied for brewery wastewater treatment. For digestion of organic brewery waste (spent grains, etc.), the Biobulk™ technology is most suitable. During anaerobic treatment, the COD in the waste(water) stream is converted into biogas. Re-use of the biogas can partly or entirely cover the wastewater treatment plant's energy needs or even create a positive energy balance. Anaerobic technology is characterized by a small surface area, low energy requirements and low waste sludge production.

Up till today, Biothane designed more than 100 anaerobic wastewater treatment plants for breweries. Clients in the brewery industry range from small breweries to large-scale beer producers.
